Reflections on the Duddon
A deep ravine near Birks Bridge, Dunnerdale, this is a glorious backwater with slow-moving, quiet flow and is little known due to its isolated situation.
A favourite haunt of the artist whose fascination with stones under water is well documented.
Greenburn Beck
A stream with a view, this part of the beck has much to offer with prolific verdant growth along a rocky descent into Langdale. The water forms deep green pools as it flows, and the observer can see below the stones brought down by winter storms.
The Eskdale Jewels
The artist's favourite pool in Eskdale, near St. Catherine's Church, Boot. A combination of pink granite and green slate makes gazing into river pools an experience to savour, and the fairy glen is completed by trees overhanging the water.
Early Summer, Langstrath
Langstrath Beck and Greenup Gill meet at a delightful deep pool at Stonethwaite in Borrowdale. The route up-river from this point towards Angle Tarn rewards you with sights of dubs and cascades and the prospect of more than one swim on a good day. The river water is heated as it flows across flat rocks, which makes these pools surprisingly warm.
